Ashes from Temple Mount

The soil contains ashes from the destruction of the First and Second Temples, which explains its grey color. In a traditional Jewish custom, the bridegroom places ash on his forehead, as an expression of the declaration "If I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy" (Psalms 137:6).
